“I am not a Story”

Free Write: After reading Galen Strawsons “I am not a Story”, I released he has a different view on narratives. He talks about how narratives are us. We all have stories, and without them we don’t live fully. We all have stories weather we like it or not. And many of us like to share our stories. Stories help us understand the world around us, as well as our selves. He also talks about how we have many selves. When I first heard that statement I thought about someone maybe bipolar, or someone with a personality disorder. I was confused to what he meant by that. But I later released he meant we all are put into different situations, and the way we handle them can differ from time to time. Creating different selves. I also think that everyone grows a lot through their life time, and I’m much different from what I was even going back 4 years to freshman year of high school. I think we all have a different perspective on life as we grow older. We gain our own personal stories, and experiences. And that shapes us to who we are today. He mentions “self-narration is a good thing, necessary for a full human life” (Strawsons. I agree with that statement. Telling and thinking about our own stories is helpful for a better understanding g for ourselves. By going through our own stories, we can realize things, and re think things that have happened in the past. It’s important to do that for a better understanding of ourselves. I like the way Strawsons put his own voice in this piece a lot. He argues with points from other authors, and describes why he agrees, or disagrees with their piece. He gives a overall personal view on narratives, and the effect of them.

  • Continue to revisit Strawson. I’m not sure if you quite captured his overall argument. He is tricky to follow because he includes a lot of the naysayer in his essay.
