While watching James Geary on his presentation about metaphors I agreed with what he was talking about. In the beginning he does a little experiment, where he showed two shapes, one spiked ball, and a more circular blob. He then said two names, Kiki and Bouba. Then asked the audience to think about what name they would give the shapes. I gave the spiked ball shape the name Kiki, and the blob shape Bouba. Then Erad said how most people would choose what I did. I thought he did a good job with the visuals he used.

When going back and reading the transcript I could still visualize what he was describing while talking about the examples he showed. Reading through again also helped me understand parts I didn’t follow while watching the video. For example, at 3:45 in the video he talks about how metaphors are synesthetic, which means you use words to describe another. Overall reading it after watching the video made me understand the whole thing better. Geary brings up many good points, and makes us aware of things we do without even knowing it.

  • Sophie,

It was nice to learn more about you via your “About Me” page. My sister-in-law is a dental hygienist and she’s in love with her career. I wish you the best as you pursue your goals!

I’m glad that you could relate with the Kiki Bouba test. I would revisit the definition for what makes for a synesthetic metaphor. Synesthesia is an interesting phenomenon–worth understanding.

Continue to challenge yourself to mark up that text. You do a great job relating your experience into the margins. Consider trying to make some critical comments on your next text. You could also try to connect what you read with what you understand about the world as a whole.
