Metaphors

While reading Khullars text he connected the medical world to metaphors. And through that I could see how important it is to the medical field. I found three quotes from him that I think are good examples of how metaphors can be used for medical things.

“physicians use metaphors in almost two-thirds of their conversations with patients” (Khullar).

Khullar explained how physicians who used metaphors with patients who had serious illnesses communicated better with them by the use of metaphors. And I agree with that, using metaphors can get to someone more then just saying flat out what it is. It made them understand the condition they had more clearly. And that’s very important for patients to know.

“The words we choose to describe illness are powerful” (Khullar).

Illness is hard for people going through it, and for those who love them. Thats why when using words to talk about it, is very important. Metaphors to me allow people to look at something in a different way, and they also describe something using a word that isn’t directly related. When Khullar says that words we use to describe illness are powerful, he’s right. Because illness is a serious thing, and when talking about them theirs a right and wrong way to talk about them.

“Military metaphors are among the oldest in medicine and they remain among the most common” (Khullar).

Military metaphors we hear all the time, like fighting, or being a soldier. They are used in the medical field to describe someone fighting a battle with an illness. I think military metaphors are important.

“It generated new perceptions”(Erad).

Erad also talks about how eye opening metaphors are. Reading and watching videos about metaphors made me relive how truly eye opening they are. They can provide another way to look at things relating to the medical field by using metaphors to help patients understand.

“essential to how we understand ourselves and others”(Geary).

Geary talks about how important metaphors are to understanding, I agree because of how they open our minds. This relates to how they can be used for medical use. Using a metaphor can open and also help patients understand a condition they have.

  • I really liked the quotes you chose, those ones were the ones that stuck in my brain as I read the article. I think your paragraphs really broke the quotes down nicely and explained them also giving your clear opinion. Including the patients side and how their love ones are affected was awesome, and talking about how metaphors make illness easier to understand is something I agree with. Great Job!

  • Great! You picked up on some important moments in the text. As you continue to work with quotes, challenge yourself to choose longer quotes with which to work. Give your sources a little more time to have their say. This will give you more to work with!
