Essay Introduction

I choose to use the article “Social Media Effect on Young Women’s Body Image Concerns: Theoretical Perspectives and an Agenda for Research” written by Richard M. Perloff. He talks about how social media, a topic that all all know too well. Social media is apart of our everyday lives, it’s an arms reach away. Almost all of us have some sort of social media. We may be familiar with Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, Linton, and Pinterest. They are all forms of media that people can post, and share things. Because of that people share images of themselves looking their best. And the pictures with beautiful women get a lot of attention. And can lead people who see those images, dissatisfied with themselves, and their body. Particularly women are targeted in social media, because they are on it more than men. Going on social media you see images of women who look “ideal”, and girls seeing those images think that’s what a women should look like. A Lot of these women on social media are very thin, or are curvaceous with a small waist. These body types are unrealistic, but girls seeing these images don’t think so. Women start objectifying themselves as things to be looked at. Girls want to look like these models, and want to be like them. Generations before us didn’t have a problem like thus as severe. I choose this topic for many reasons. I think at this age everyone can relate to this topic. It’s a story we have heard one too many times of girls changing themselves to look like others who are on social media. This is a problem we have to address as a society. The large impact will get bigger and bigger as time goes on if we don’t stop it. This year one of my friends made a video on the impact of social media, and interviewed myself and many other girls. And the video had such positive feedback from the community, and many girls related to this video. Like I said earlier, social media everywhere. I plan to introduce Lehrer and Ma to show the art, and science aspect of social media’s effect. For example Ma talks about how art is an important learning tool. Its creative, and makes us drawn in. Social media has art all over it. Modeling pictures, pictures artist post in general, and visuals are all forms of art. It influences us to want to look a certain way, as well as draws us in. Science is related to this topic because social media impacts all fields of study. The article I used is a reliable and credible source because the intent of the article is to educate people on social media’s impact on women. The article is purely an educational intended article. And isn’t sponsored by anything. The author also cited all his references in proper format.
